{October 23, 2007}   War Posters

The tree documents are posters. One of them is for a TV series, Band of Brothers, while the two others are posters of films, Apocalypse now and Saving private Ryan.  They all portray war movies, however, while Apocalypse Now is about the war in Viet Nam, the others are set during the World War II. Francis Coppola directed Apocalypse now, which is starred by Marlon Brando and Harrison Ford. The film won a Golden Globe. Saving private Ryan, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, is starred by Tom Hanks and it won 5 Oscars and one Golden Globe. Both directors worked together to produce the TV series, Band of Brothers, which also won many awards. Apocalypse now is the most different  poster. The scenery is a sunset, just like the poster of S.P.R., but the horizon is lower and there are no human beings. It’s more natural because we see a forest, the sun and a river while the others just have solders. In addition to this, A.N. is the only one that does not have credits. Its title is also at the bottom but it seems to be written in longhand whereas the others are normal typed fonts. Also, while the title of B. of B. is in upper case , S.P.R. is in lowercase. Although Band of brothers has persons appearing,  saving private Ryan just shows the faces of the solders. B of B is the only that has a catch phrase. The colors are the same but in different quantities and tones. The orange colour appears more in A.N. and the gray is dominant in B of B. The black is on the tree posters, in A.N. to contrast with the title, in B of B to show the stifling atmosphere and finally in s.p.r. to increase the mystery. I will analyze the poster of Apocalypse now because I think it’s the most interesting and it makes me want to see the film. I said that it’s natural but also we imagine that it must be about soldiers in a war as well. It’s really different as they just show the place where the film is set.  Maybe the title is made like that to represent writing ink that use to be very used in countries of the orient.(do not understand your sentence) The helicopters passing in front of the sun look like birds fleeing something bad. The smoke that involves the scene reinforces the fear of this wild place. But there is some hope and we feel that we can breathe because the horizon is very large so we can see everything. This gives us a feeling of security. And then we ask ourselves if the film has a happy ending.
